well, I am happy for the Vandals! I couldn't find a Zag site to complain on so I will hear. Being a Zag fan I agree with Coach Few they got what they deserved against Portland State. And they are a final four team? Baloney! There is nothing right now about this team that is beyond the opening around of the tournament, maybe second round but that is no given with what I saw last nite. If this team is final four material they should still be undefeated but they are not, so they aren't! They lack poise when they need it most. Oh yes, they won some games against big competition but frankly the teams they have beaten so far are not top twenty material, The Huskies are. Arizona is not and certainly Portland State is not, so that should tell us Zag fans that we are dreaming if we think this team has a shot at the final four. There has been something about the teams lately that are missing the right ingredient to accomplish the big jump from just getting there to proving they belong. In all the years Few has been there they have accomplished getting beyond the second round just three times, and the only time they game real close they lost their poise with Adam crying on the floor at the end. No, this team had better pick it up and quickly if they are going to be able to get a top four seed of any kind out of the WCC, and one of many things they need to get is the killer instinct, free throw shooting that is not laughable and some more heart. They didn't show it last nite. Come on guys..prove me wrong!

Verlin is looking to be much better than GP, BUT...

If a player is kicked off another team, it's a good bet the coach who did it sees it as the very last option.

TR,
May I say, that was very eloquently stated. I agree 100% with your comments.

I suppose the UberDweeb, 808Vandal, will disagree with you. He's as happy as a clam with UI Athletics.

Posted by TR at Vandals take out South Carolina State at 19 Dec 2:02 PM:

Quick question on Idaho's methods of trying to get a larger fan base: On the other website, one guy named Die Cougar Die is basically calling people chumps if they don't risk life and limb on icy winter roads to watch UI play WSU in the dome.

In football season, Spear gets on the radio minutes before games, chiding Vandal fans for not being indoors during 80 degree days. Note to Rob Spear: These people have already made their choice for that Saturday. They're not going to be listening and say, "Hey, you know what. Rob is right! Everyone in the car, we're speeding 80 miles to catch the second half!"

Why don't UI fans and administrators try other methods. First: The customer is always right, quit insulting them. Two: Knock off the cult mentality that if you're not an alum, you're not a worthy booster. Three: More on the cult ... quit this, "We're In, Are You?" crap. Invite everyone in.

Four: Start giving out free tickets to everyone K-12 in Latah and Nez Perce counties. I got interested in UI athletics at a young age because I bought a cheap button for a couple bucks that let me into all UI hoop and football games. Those fans stay with you for years.

I've never understood "roll calls" and insulting people who won't risk life and limb on Highway 90 or worse, Highway 95 in Idaho over dangerous passes and inclimate weather.

If they can make it, great. If not, that's the way it goes.

Meanwhile, start ENCOURAGING people to become UI fans, quit discouraging them.

No, Chief. Also, I have never said that Akey should be replaced; that would be a mistake of gargantuan proportions. I do think moving football to Div. I-AA would be an excellent move by Idaho, however. Then Idaho could lower Akey's pay to more appropriately reflect his abysmal skills at coaching.

Like you, 808Vandal, I'm anxiously looking forward to Akey's two-win 2009 season! At $125,000 per win, including I-AA wins, Akey has a job we can all envy.

Loser, after 4 coaches in 5 years, do you really think replacing Akey at this point would solve anything? That would bring us to 5 coaches in 7 years... That would go a long way towards building the program, don't you think? In fact, why don't we just start offering 2 year contracts to everybody so we can have a new coach every 2 years. Yipee!

"Peach was just one sack away from the Big Sky Conference single-season record, owned by Montana's Andy Petak with 19, and finished fifth-best in FCS history. He is second in the Big Sky and fourth in FCS for career sacks with 35.5, finishing just three sacks behind Jared Allen of Idaho State, the 2003 Buchanan Award winner and now an NFL standout. Peach also owns school standards for single-season and career sacks, as well as tackles for loss marks for a season and a career.

Peach won by the largest margin in Buchanan Award history, earning 39 first- place votes and 313 points to finish 107 points ahead of runner-up Jovan Belcher, a defensive end from Maine. Belcher had 15 first-place votes and 206 points, while Appalachian State safety Mark LeGree placed third with 183 points."

TR is correct. I have no problems with people being critical of the school as a whole. TR is more critical than me, but he also has logical, well thought-out comments. He can recoginize both the positive and the negative.

The problem with endless, martin, and even you to an extent, moscow native, is that it is the SAME thing over and over. Be critical, fine, but if you are a fan, also recoginize the positive. An Idaho player is recognized as an All-American. It is no less of an achievement just because he is a punter versus a RB or QB. He has a shot at going to the NFL and representing Idaho. We should all be proud of that.

Look at the post by endless in the write-up on Idaho's BB win last night. Endless made the same comment he has made several times already. His comment wasn't even about the BB game.

That is the problem.

That said, I don't like the new look. I understand that SR need to expose me to ads. No problem there. That's the price of admission. But the combination of the vertical link listing bars and the ad quadrant literally consume 50% of the space down the screen. The result is lots of scrolling to get far less information than we do now. I thought the point of the internet was to make communications easier, not harder to find.

It also appears that to read SR content I will have to be a "premium" subsriber. Please pass this comment on to the appropriate folks. It's over-priced for those of us out-of-towners that are not SR readers. For about the same price as the SR wants for ONLY the "premium" internet access I get printed newspaper hand delivered to my door every day. Shouldn't the internet be cheaper? I value your insight and posting and I would pay a reasonable price to the SR website for that reason alone...but electronic communications ought to be less expensive than a printed paper I get on my door, right.

i do like the way this site is now ( old ) and its because its mostly ad free.

i too don't understand why designers run wide margins on BOTH sides, but it probably has to do with revenue. results are squeezing text and simple stories, with lots of fluff and little meat.

Newspapers like the S/R are in serious financial difficulty these days. We're going to have to put up with ads on the new site and, at the least, understand why they're attempting some hard-sell activities. Maybe we'll even become occasional subscribers.

That will be worth it if Vince is able to continue doing all that he does for us now! And in this business climate, I don't think that's a given. (Hope I'm wrong about that though.)

Baller, First of all congratulations on the early success of the basketball team, you are a 2-minute lapse from being undefeated and I understand the JV program is undefeated thus far as well. Coming on the heels of what
x-country accomplished, NC has alot to be proud of athletically.

You have a very supportive group of football parents, who showed up every week to support you guys and we intend to do everything possible to support your AD in selecting the right coach to rebuild the program. The coach and parents are 2-components, but the players are the most important. You need to do the following:

Be in the weight room now, don't wait for summer. You have a good core of skill players, but you can't get pushed around like you did this year.
Every returner needs to convince another athlete to turn out, who didn't play. I can't believe how many basketball players, wrestlers and baseball players I see that don't play football. NC provides a great opportunity to be a 3-sport athlete, which is rare these days.
Stay on top of your fellow athletes academically. 20+ freshman dropped out of the program this year for grades, which is totally unacceptable.
The process will take time, but everyone must be accountable on and off the field if you want to change the results. I agree with GSL fan about football being a numbers game. You can't have 8-10 guys working their butts off, while the rest of the team is just happy to be in the uniform.

NC probably has its most experienced incoming freshman class in many years from the Pop Warner ranks, so that is a great start. Rebuilding starts today. Best of luck the remainder of the basketball season.

What a ridiculous comment.

All I was doing was pointing out that UI has had All-Americans and the same amount as BSU. I'm not sure how that's a ridiculous comment.

As for the Potlatch High deal, it's a joke one time, but each and every day the UI football program is bashed. After awhile it's like the Bronco who cried wolf.

Al you need to back off and stop. It is bad enough to obsess about HS sports, but when you start focusing this much it is really odd. Whats next are you going to lurk around the locker rooms and see which team gets dressed faster and how that correlates to the success of their full court press when they are leading during the 3rd quarter on game days that fall all odd days of the month.

Posted by Rue2 at Bullpups take care of Shadle at 17 Dec 7:02 AM:

GP SP good game, Gonzaga has scoring capabilities in all positions and Shadles defense is lazy with the exception of Barnes. I don't think any one in the GSL will beat Prep unless Shadle digs deep in next meeting.

Posted by GSLFan at Bullpups take care of Shadle at 17 Dec 4:45 AM:

North Central is a brutal football job and has to have EXACTLY the right person with a long-term commitment to the community to make it work.

Watching what Coach Miethe is starting to put together at Rogers is a blueprint for how to deal with a difficult situation - and that starts with building a pipeline of talent deep down into SYSA/Y-ball leagues. And then retaining those players beyond the first year of school.

Football, more than any other sport, is a numbers game - which requires skill AND depth. And, it's a sport which can't be perfected in the driveway or highways indvidually (like basketball or X-country- where NC has had recent success). Lack of numbers, limited talent pool...makes for a big hill to climb.

The challenge at both NC and Rogers are the outside forces that pull at young athletes moreso than the other city schools. It's going to take a special person who doesn't view NC as a stepping stone to come in and take over a difficult situation.

A few days ago I pointed out how awful the Free Throw performance seems to be in girls GSL play. One pathetic response said coaches don't need to work on that fundamental since they expect the players to do it on their own time. Really? Could it be the coaches don't actually understand the muscular mechanics of the art of free throws and are too embarassed to admit it?

Do you really think any great coach you want to mention, Wooden, Knight, Linda Sheridan, Squinty Hunter, etc. would accept settling for mediocrity?

Tonight's numbers are the Good, the Bad and the Ugly:

The Good:

GP 8-10
SP 4-6

The Bad:

EV 12-19 (maybe the 9-23 last game shocked them into action)

Mead 14-28
CV 17-26
Rog 15-24
NC 14-24
Fer: 13-21

The Ugly:

MS: 6-13
UH: 6-15

Some of the miss totals are as many points as might be scored in a full quarter.

Really, in competitive HS basketball, teams ought to be at 75 to 80%. Especially with the girls, muscle and strength are not needed for decent free throw shooting. It is 95% mental.

Posted by TheOtherDave at A couple notes for exam week at 16 Dec 10:22 PM:

Maybe KenPom considers 10 games a big enough sample size to start making predictions...I can't find any relevant description of his method at the site.

I don't think a sample size of 10 is good enough, particularly when the 10 games played don't represent what the Cougs will encounter. Or, maybe in a strange coincidence, they do, on average, represent what Pac-10 play will be like. Playing three top 15 teams and a bunch of creampuffs might actually average out to a typical Pac-10 team.

The ten games before making predictions thing must just be an arbitrary number on KenPom's part. In any case, the accuracy of predictions is certain to go up as WSU gets into conference play. Let's reassess the Pomeroy stuff in about three weeks...

On the plus side, it appears that no team is dominant this year. Oregon looks really weak. ASU is not winning convincingly. Nor is UCLA. OSU just upset Nebraska. UA just had a big win but has otherwise been mediocre (for them). The rest of the P-10 look like they could beat a top 10 team on Thursday and then lose to San Jose State on Saturday.

I say 10-8 for the Cougs is a good bet. The offense will be spotty but the "D" will most frequently be suffocating. Looks like we're in for a wild ride in conference. Unfortunately, WSU has "bubble team" written all over it right now.

Realistically, I'll grudgingly take a deep NIT run this year. But not the CBI thing--you know, the one the Huskies got booted out of in the first round? A third straight NCAA trip, in whichever bizarre way it might happen to come about, would be a pleasant surprise.

I think it's a shame that people are being run off this site because they were critical of the football program. I didn't see where Martin was critical of the basketball program this year and I never saw him bash the facilities like TR does.

Does anybody really care?

Posted by Jim at A couple notes for exam week at 16 Dec 8:20 PM:

I'm also a big KenPom fan. As for the WSU predictions, a couple interesting things I noticed. WSU currently is predicted to win the remainder of their home games, with each game having a chance of winning no less than 63%. This is pretty surprising to me, and I'd be ecstatic (albeit shocked) if WSU can manage to win all of their home games from here on out (right now I feel that's super unlikely). On the road, WSU is predicted to lose by 3 pts or less to ASU, UA, UCLA, USC and UW. Statistically, WSU is very close to being the highest rated team in the Pac-10 by Kenpom, which I don't think is really deserved at this point. Hopefully they can prove they are worthy...

As for getting into the NCAA tourney, I think they'll need to go 11-7 or better in conference. A win on the road at LSU will obviously help. With no legitimate non-conf wins (so far) and the Pac-10 being down, 9-9 definitely isn't gonna cut it.

Posted by RobH at A couple notes for exam week at 16 Dec 5:55 PM:

I have been following KenPom for years. It has been pretty accurate, and he doesn't put the odds up until this time of the year.

He projects the odds of winning every game. So he may have you winning 4 games with a 75% chance of winning, so the percentages say you would go 3-1 in that stretch.

Mike, I would be dissapointed with 9-9, but it is a cautious prediction. I doubt that would get us into the tournamnent. All the things you liste, sickness injuries, grades, 18 year old kids apply to the competition as well.

It is tough competition and playing in tough places though.

Couldn't agree more with Rick S. pk

Posted by Nuss at A couple notes for exam week at 16 Dec 5:21 PM:

There actually weren't predictions earlier in the year -- I think he probably waits until there's a large enough sample size to make sure the predictions are statistically significant.

Those predictions also change as performances continue to pile up. If memory serves, though, he was pretty close with last year's team. I remember thinking, "They're a top 10 team! They'll do better than that!" Then they pretty much did what his system predicted. There is a lot to be said for those efficiency margins, and the Cougs' is very, very good right now.

Posted by Mike, Sequim at A couple notes for exam week at 16 Dec 4:44 PM:

Let's see now, 18 games in conference, 9 away, injuries, sickness, youth, grades, an occasional flair-up in the ranks and some pretty tough places to play!

I'd be OK with .500 ball and doing well in the conf. tourney. A little to sweet think'n for me.

Posted by TR at Conley named to Walter Camp All-American team at 16 Dec 3:36 PM:

The problem I have is even when there's a positive story -- like this one on Conley -- Endless has to come in with a jab. Nothing in life is 100 percent negative.

Even UI hoop appears to be on the upswing.

Ridiculous comments like Potlatch High make me question whether this person is even a fan.

Posted by JugHead at A couple notes for exam week at 16 Dec 3:10 PM:

At least we have some recruits this year, last year we couldn't lose any because we didn't have any to lose. I like the way Wulff is pulling guys from the west side of the state who actually received offers from other schools (including UW). Sometimes just getting some bigger fish on the line helps, even if you don't net them.

Posted by TheOtherDave at A couple notes for exam week at 16 Dec 2:20 PM:

KenPom's projections look a wee bit optimistic to my eyes, too, Vince.

Two wins over Stanford? Two over Oregon? I know this is all about statistics, but those sweeps are highly unlikely in any season, regardless of the two teams' projections.

In the end, the overall record may be close (and I'd take it right now if I could lock it in--So would Bennett, probably).

One thing I'd like to see is how accurate the predictions were in games already played. They are all blanked out now. This is understandable for a stats guy, now having better data to work with, but it'd be nice to have his past hits and misses.

Just checked out the Pomeroy projections.

He has us winning @ LSU, sweeping Cal Stanford, Oregon, and Oregon State; and splitting with everyone else. It does add up to 13-5 in conference.

Sounds good to me, but I'd just as soon keep the streak against the dawgs intact.

Go Cougs!

I think the reason everyone is tired of endless loser is because he says the same thing over and over and over and over and over... You get the point.

All of his posts have one message. He doesn't acknowledge (understand?) anything regarding the actual play of the various Idaho teams or their opponents. If he actually posted some insight into play calling or actual game performances (football, bball, vball, etc) it would be fine. However, all he says is negative. That tells me he isn't really a sports fan, isn't knowledgable, and doesn't even really try to care. This is just a soap box for him to hear himself speak.

TR and I don't agree on very much, but I don't mind reading his posts because at least he is somewhat objective and tires to be logical and supportive. He may want change, but he actually makes a case for his beliefs.

Endless, martin, etc. don't make a case for anything except that they just like to see themselves post.

And, no way UM beats Idaho if they played in the 2nd half of the season. If they played in the first 6 games, maybe, and no way Central Washington would be within 40 points of Idaho, and Potlatch...Well, they wouldn't even be within 40 points of Grangeville...

Anyother stupid comments?

I agree, but as you can see I don't feel that they would have lost by 60.

Posted by TR at Conley named to Walter Camp All-American team at 16 Dec 11:27 AM:

Actually, I don't mind if someone here doesn't like Akey or wants to go back to the Big Sky. I don't agree with those opinions, so be it.

But when we're talking about losing to Montana 82-10 and Potlatch High School, the discussion loses all credibility.

The only way change will occur at UI is with thoughtful discussion and action.

Posted by nibooster at Conley named to Walter Camp All-American team at 16 Dec 11:07 AM:

Actually, I don't think they would have lost by 60, but I do think if they played in Missoula they would lose by 14-17, playing in Moscow a toss up, playing on a neutral site they would have lost by 7-10.
I am a Vandal booster and am very excited about basketball, not only the future, but this year. I am not optimistic about football and Mr. Akey. I don't think he is a good X&O coach, and I don't feel he is a good judge of talent and character.
That's my opinion and I admit I can be wrong and I hope I am.

Understanding that a "verbal" is just that and means nothing, our Wazzu Cougs certainly have more, and of a higher ranking, than I can ever remember at this time of the year. I guess we had a top 25 class in the Nation towards the end of the '90s. So we'll see how this finally ranks on signing day in February.

GO COUGS!!...GO WULFF!!

Casey will be a good player for WSU, they will most likely play him at safety. He is one of those HS players who never left the field, returned kicks, played QB, and DB, team captain. Just a good all-around footballer with a real high gridiron IQ. Played for Matt Eichelberger's HS coach Jamie Plenkovich, one of the best high school coaches in the state. He will make everybody around him better every day of practice.

I read about some players contemplating the possibilty of an undefeated season. Now, after this, I hope they realize that they don't win just by showing up. They are going to get everyone's best shot so it's time to get back to "just sawing wood."

I don't mind Endless calling for change at UI, but saying they'll lose by 60 to UM and to Potlatch High is a little much. I'll be the first admit to say UI athletics is down, but to think they'll lose to Potlatch High, I mean, c'mon. How does that reasoning provoke change at UI. All it does is get people thinking he's a whacko.

So I'm guessing nibooster, that you, too, believe UI would lose to Potlatch High? Uh, Ok.

Posted by Jeff Horton at Day after Arizona; Zags drop in polls at 15 Dec 5:00 PM:

Don't get me wrong, Gonzaga is my favorite college basketball team. As an alum, I support them. However, as a basketball coach they have not played like a highly ranked team. 1) Up to the Arizona game, they have not played well in the first half, 2) They have not had a complete team game but games where some are playing well while others struggle, 3) perimeter defenders continue to get beat by quicker players creating situations where post help is needed thus leaving offensive post players open, 4) lack of physical post play (if the opponents post players are physical on defense the Gonzaga posts are ineffective), 5) rely on to many high pick and rolls that are easily defended (what happened to Flex?) (against WSU, the cougs defense is based on driving the ball to the key and help. Gonzaga ran a lot of high pick and rolls in which the dribbler went right where the defense wanted them; the key). Right now, I see the strength of Gonzaga in their fastbreak and secondary break. Their half court offense does not seem to get them in situations that are beneficial to scoring. Their best defense has been their 2-3 zone (that is when they took over the Oklahoma State game). Coach Few stated, "We prepared for both the 1-1-3 zone and 2-2-1 (press)" and "Few reiterated that Gonzaga -- as a team --didn抰 handle the press". This doesn't sound good. I am sure he was aware that Arizona was playing Lute Olson's successful 1-3-1 half court matchup zone. Pargo said, "They were really aggressive. They didn抰 sit back and let us come to them. They took what they wanted." If Gonzaga does not try to compete at the same level it may be a long season. This is the way they should play. Last, in a regional newspaper, a comment by a Gonzaga player about going the season undefeated was quoted. Gonzaga has one of the toughest schedules in the country. Anything can, and did, happen.
